Voter Turnout in Larchmont and Mamaroneck Today

Voters were turning out today in the area, with more expected for the evening.

People have been exercising their right to vote all around Larchmont and Mamaroneck today, with a steady turnout reported at several different locations.  Although afternoon seemed to be slightly less hectic than reported in the morning, election workers said they expected the number to swell during the “commuter hours” as people drop in after they get off the train, on their way home from work.

As of 1:30 p.m., Town of Mamaroneck (TOM) District 6/Larchmont District 1 had 46 total voters, said Election Inspector and Larchmont resident David Ciminesi, who was working at the Chatsworth Avenue School in Larchmont.

“We don’t expect a huge turnout,” he said, estimating that approximately 5-10 percent of registered voters would hand in their ballots today.

In TOM District 9/Larchmont District 3, 62 out of 549 registered voters had voted so far, said Election Inspector and Larchmont resident Maryann Leitner.

“We only had three [votes] in the Independent primary in September,” she said, by way of comparison.

Larchmont resident Thomas Constabile was hopeful whoever gets voted into office would focus on tax relief.

“I guess in a community like this, trying to keep taxes under control,” he said, in answer to a question about what issues brought him out to vote.

Constabile also echoed a common complaint that many politicians have confused the priorities of their constituents with their own agendas.

“I think the problem with the government nationally is too much political posturing and too little governing….trying to maintain a fiefdom,” he said.

At Mamaroneck Avenue School, the turnout of voters was sporadic, with District 1 reporting 58 votes so far out of 550 registered voters, said Lillian Stoff, an election inspector.

“More people will come around 6:30-7:00,” she said, adding that the District had a similarly spartan turnout for primaries, with only two reported votes.

An election inspector at the Village of Mamaroneck Firehouse on 146 Palmer Ave., Mary Borrero of White Plains, said voter turnout hovered at over 100 so far today for Village of Mamaroneck (VOM) District 3.

Another comparatively busy location was on the other side of town, at the Town of Mamaroneck Town Center. As of this afternoon, the parking lot was completely full and a steady stream of people were coming in and out of the voting center.  Election Inspector Virginia Carpenter, a town resident, reported 137 voters so far out of 789 registered in Town District 23.

Village resident Robert Poney, although not motivated by any particular issue while voting today, was nevertheless compelled to vote as an American citizen.

“I’m doing my civic duty,” he said, his American flag pin and Air Force cap further emphasizing his patriotism.
