Vieira Organics in Larchmont a Destination For All-Natural Products

The month-old Vieira Organics in Larchmont stocks an array of organic baby products and clothing, kitchenware, candles, lotions, shampoos, and handmade soaps.

The growing popularity of organic products and the concept of “going green” has spurred a plethora of companies to declare their products as being natural and good for the environment while still retaining an ingredient list filled with unpronounceable chemicals.  A smaller number of hard to find specialty brands that actually use all-natural ingredients—typically only sold at small boutiques and health food stores—are now available locally at the newly opened Vieira Organics on 1969A Palmer Ave. in Larchmont.

The store stocks all-natural baby skincare products such as Episencial, Butt Naked Baby, My Mama's Love, and Nature's Baby Organics among others and will soon carry the Innersense, Babo Botanicals and Aubrey Organics lines in September.  None of these lines are available at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s said storeowner Cindy Vieira.

In addition to baby care products, the store also has an array of 100 percent organic children’s clothing brands including Coccoli, Urban Smalls, Finn & Emma, BungelowBeBe, and Kee-Ka, which are available in sizes from newborn to 6T.

According to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Marketing Service, in order for an organic product to be certified as 100 percent organic, it can only contain organically produced ingredients.  Further requirements can be found here on the USDA website. Currently, the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) does not include specific processing or manufacturing standards for textile products, including the use of inorganic dyes and other processing chemicals. For further information, the Organic Trade Association website has a list of suppliers who are certified as organic.

Vieira—who grew up watching her grandmother make her own laundry detergent and soaps—began whipping up her own shampoo, lotion and hand sanitizer as a remedy to her daughter’s skin problems and colic.

The idea of opening up her own store came to fruition after she, “was doing the online thing and door-to-door for awhile—I got tired of that,” Vieria said.

Vieria scouted locations in Yonkers, Scarsdale and White Plains but settled on Larchmont because, “the people seem friendlier…it was a family environment.”

So far, her customers have been mostly “moms and grandmas” who have heard about the store from others or have walked by it as they strolled down Palmer Avenue.

Vieria Organics is open from 12-5 p.m. for the summer, and closed on Thursdays.  (914) 834-2734.
