More than 600 participants ran in the 43rd Annual Turkey trot held at Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck on a beautiful Sunday morning.

"This is the largest Turkey Trot race we've ever had--we've doubled the race since 2008 and part of it changing the race course from a five mile to a 5k; with a mindset that in 2011 we'll do a 5k and a 10k concurrently so we'll get the best of both worlds, Saracino said. People that want to seriously run beyond the 5 miles would be the 10k."

Saracino also said that a non-runner can participate in the 5 k and power walk. The event was sponsored by TD Bank who provided the t-shirts for every runner and Pace BMW who sponsored the awards and the Sound Shore Runners and Multi-Sport Club.

"Recreation events don't often happen unless you have some corporate backing; so we're happy that Pace BMW and TD Bank are very community minded and wanted to be a part of the race this year," said Saracino.

Gregg Rubin, the president of the Sound Shore Runners and Multi-Sport Club who co-sponored the event.

"We have 60 runners both volunteering and running. We've helped for the last five years with the mile markers, the water stops, registration we even have a [man dressed as a turkey] running!"

Nicole Granston, of New Rochelle was running with the New Ro Runners in the Turkey Trot this year.

"I recently started running over the summer and this is actually my first local event so I wanted to participate in the Turkey Trot. I heard about it before but just never ran in it, said Granston. I'm running with the club [New Ro Runners], so it should be fun."

It was the first time running in the race for Katy Fetzer of Mamaroneck.

"I do 5ks and this one is local so I'm excited to do it but I've ran other races before," Fetzer said.

Mike Curtin of Brewster, grew up in Mamaroneck and was pumped up to run in his second Turkey Trot. He's been running in other marathons prior to this race.

"You just got to get off the couch it's a good way to cool down from the running season—I've been running for four years now doing four marathons including the Ironman Race in Lake Placid. I'm not a professional runner I just do it as a form of therapy it's good exercise," Curtin said matter-of-factly.

Carrie Amon, the principal of Mamaroneck Avenue School said that the Turkey Trot was a good way to introduce her students to a healthy lifestyle.

"We have 100 children running and 70 adults. We have a team of six teachers who are the forerunners in the run and every other year get sponsors and signs kids up and get their t-shirts; so we're excited they're joining together for a community event," Amon explained. This is our third time doing it but we do it every other year because it's a lot of work to put it together but we hope that if we sponsor it one year the kids and the families will do it the following year," She said.

Amon also mentioned that the kids just love the race—it teaches them to have a healthy body and mind.

The traditional turkey soup was served to all the runners at the end of the race.
