Mercedes Benz of Larchmont to Move to New Rochelle

Although Mercedes Benz of Larchmont will be physically located in New Rochelle in the next few months, the name will stay the same.

Currently located in the Town of Mamaroneck, plans to move to a gleaming glass building in New Rochelle in a few months, yet they will keep the name intact.

Plenty of businesses seek the cachet of Larchmont, of course, especially if their address falls within the village postal zone.

“It speaks volumes about the quality of life in Larchmont and how people want to associate themselves with the name,” said Larchmont Mayor Josh Mandell. “We don’t have trademark on the name, but imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. When you go around the world, you see places calling themselves New York Pizza and they’re not in the city.”

As for New Rochelle, the city appreciates the windfall that the establishment’s relocation represents. Auto buyers pay sales tax in the zip code where they reside, but New Rochelle stands to reap around $200,000 in property taxes from the new 45,630 square foot building, about double the revenue of the demolished 15,000 square foot GMC/Cadillac dealership that formerly occupied the lot, said the city’s Development Commissioner, Michael Freimuth. The final figure will be determined on assessment after the building is completed.

Still, said New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson, “We’d certainly prefer businesses in the city to associate proudly with New Rochelle.”

Though the dealership will be leaving its present location for just across the border, the Town of Mamaroneck will still collect property taxes on the building. Mercedes Benz of Larchmont will relocate its new car sales, service center and used car sales lot, presently located across the street from its current location. The building’s future is uncertain, said Town Administrator Steve Altieri.

The massive new building, which features an outside ramp leading to the roof, stirred significant opposition in the Sun Haven neighborhood of New Rochelle, which prompted the city’s planning board to impose 17 stipulations on the structure in order to issue its approval.

The company is required to conduct an accident study for the intersection, provide onsite parking for employees, minimize noise by placing all air conditioning units along Route 1 and upgrade pedestrian signals around the intersection.

In addition, the city delineated the dealership’s hours of operation and must approve of all signage. Trees and other landscaping will be placed around the property to minimize and limitations were placed on where customers can test drive vehicles.

Completion of the building is expected later this year. Executives at Mercedes Benz of Larchmont declined to speak with Patch about the move.
