Family and Friends Attend Departure Ceremony For Local Soldiers Bound For Kuwait
More than 100 soldiers from the New York Army National Guard's Company B, 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry Regiment assemble at Peekskill Armory for their departure ceremony.
They stood in small groups as they talked with their wives, parents, sons and daughters, friends, and co-workers until called to form up as a company.
One-hundred and twenty soldiers of the New York Army National Guard's Company B, 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry Regiment stood at attention in formation on the floor of the Peekskill Armory on Sunday afternoon as their departure ceremony got underway.
The soldiers will head to Camp Shelby in Mississippi where they will train for deployment along with nearly 1,700 other New York soldiers in the 27th Brigade Combat Team, joining soldiers from several other states who will then deploy to Kuwait.
During the ceremony, Colonel Ray Shields, chief of staff for the New York National Guard, awarded Specialist Mark Dougherty of Mahopac the Purple Heart for injuries he received in combat on a prior deployment to Afghanistan.
Walt Pizzola of Mahopac said goodbye to his grandmother, Carmela Yobek, also of Mahopac. Michael Fiume of Peekskill received a personal thank you from County Legislator and former Mayor John Testa during the ceremony.
Following the ceremony, Specialist Mario Orlando of Peekskill got a tearful hug from Kelly Stroh, wife of fellow soldier SSGT Ronald Stroh.
"They say, one family, one heart, and she's the heart of this company," said Orlando of Kelly Stroh's support of the unit.
Christine Smith of Pearl River pointed out her husband, SSGT Kirk Smith, to their daughter, Addison, 2, as they watched along with the families and friends of service men and women who may be gone for up to a year.

Why are our soldiers being deployed for active duty to Kuwait?
George Datino
7:08 am on Monday, January 30, 2012
Just because we are withdrawing from Iraq and Afghanistan doesn't mean we are withdrawing from the area. We will need to keep a major presence in the area and have troops ready to move at a moments notice. Oh wait, this wasn't included in all the press releases about the withdrawal? Wow, I wonder why they left this part out?
Ralph Tamlyn

Well ... let's see, we have a war started by a previous President, which is not yet over. Maybe we need some troops in nearby bases to support our soldiers in that war.
George Datino

With the end of the Iraqi war and the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, the buildup of troops in Kuwait are not in support of those troops but seem to be more as a buildup that was reported in a October 29, 2011 NY Times article, "That repositioning could include new combat forces in Kuwait able to respond to a collapse of security in Iraq or a military confrontation with Iran.". I feel better with our soldiers over here with US...why you say...to save us from Obama's private madcow army that are out on the streets causing chaos. You can see them camping out at Zoocati park and Oakland Ca. They are a threat to our States, where they intend to occupy the State Capital buildings like the 2 million dollar damage Obama's army did in Madison.

@Ralph, Thanks for your comment and we agree—we aim to, whenever possible, post events in advance. Next time we'll be sure to post the opportunity to meet our soldiers who are serving or have served in advance. Because of the incredible number of community events taking place in towns with Patch sites, we also depend on our readers to post events to the calendar, which is almost 100 percent user-generated. Instructions are here: http://bedford.patch.com/articles/how-to-post-your-news-on-patch

A presence elsewhere in the world? Bill, it is 330 miles from Kuwait City to Baghdad. It's not like they're putting troops thousands of miles away. My point was and still is, if Obama is going to take credit for bringing the troops home, but in reality sending troops to a place less than 400 miles away than from where they were, be honest and tell people that. If you want to call that hate, feel free, however you're simply wrong. He's not being honest, how's that?

As we write comments, 120 of our best citizens are being separated from their families so that the world can be a safer place. Yet you folks think it's an appropriate time to critisize our President, judge the tactical decisions of deployment or encourage people to vote for Ron Paul, Newt or whoever isn't President Obama. You all need to remember that the freedom that you are exercising was paid for in the blood of our soldiers and we owe them not only our thanks but our support. Can't we put a lid on the hositility for five minutes and wish these brave men and women the best and let them know that we will pray for their safe return?

It Has Always Been The Soldier.
It is the soldier,
not the President who gives us democracy.
It is the soldier,
not the Congress who takes care of us.
It is the soldier,
not the Reporter who has given us Freedom of Press.
It is the soldier,
not the Poet who has given us Freedom of Speech.
It is the soldier,
not the campus Organizer who has given us the
Freedom to Demonstrate.
It is the soldier,
who salutes the flag;
who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
that allows the protester to burn the flag.

Mungo, that is the whole point....we don't want our soldiers to shed another drop of blood for a worthless war or worthless people who hate us....My question has not been answered because no one here knows WHY our soldiers are being deployed to Kuwait.
Can you answer the question without making up something like a fairy tale reason. I doubt it. Learn to THINK!

the same reason our guys are/were still in South Korea. To keep the animals in thier cage in the north of the dmz. Kuwait is still an ally(sp?) to the U.S. and vulnerable to the threat of terrorism from outside its borders. Any president would have done the same. In fact, its one of the first times this president has listened to his military advisors. Give it a rest and pray these guys all come home safe and wish them Godspeed.

You people should be reading updates from twitter news outlets. Thousands were redeployed to Jordan, Israel, Diego Garcia, the Gulf area. This is prep for Iran Shiite Crescent containment and war (maybe).
Peel the onion - we do not deploy The Guard for regular duty rotation. BY May we will have at least 4 carrier groups at Hormuz and possibly a fifth.

To Lanning and the rest of the Editors: You really should consider leaving the posts as they were and not delete what you think is unrelated (very very relative term) unless you will run afoul of a law. The market place of ideas will decide what is acceptable or not - with all the SOPA, PIPA, ACTA and other laws, treaties, censorships a local Patch should be a refuge for the First Amendment, no matter how insulting some comments get. This country was not built on "p.c." nor do our laws reflect that monster. My old man did not fight in WW2 for censorship - just the opposite. So learn lessons from history and get with the American Program of 1st Amendment protection - BE a WInter Soldier for the US Constitution!

Hey Francis- thank you for the thank you! But I fear we are losing America and American values. It's now editor's choice of which books to burn and we are supposed to say "yay!". I feel bad for my kids. I posted this a.m. that I wanted my son home NOW (radar defense contractor employee) and that Obummah (spelled like khilafah) had three precious years he squandered by playing golf and destroying the Constitution and ignoring the third Jihad - because of HIM we are faced with a fait acompli where our kids are now placed into Barry's meat grinder. I also posted that Panetta threw Israel under the bus - he disclosed the approximate time of an Israeli strike - giving the Iranians a head's up to get themselves moving so they can waste our kids. So the editor's removed the post. No profanity, no personal attacks, just anti-Obummah politics and for that, scrubbed.
wow again.
Oh right, I also said he was turning America into the 58th OIC State. And then I posted a short blurb on how the Islamists won a majority in the governement in Kuwait - that got scrubbed also.
Patch is MSM - we just had more freedom in the beginning - then HuffPost lowered the boom - cracked our heads. No warm fuzzy comments? scrubbed!

FAST AND FURIOUS for one - emails came out about this felony murder project being one to kill the second Amendment - read the friday email dumps and testimony. Recess appointments for two - see Sen Mike lee give testimony yesterday (*or was it wed?) BRILLIANT constitutional analysis, reciting the Founders, the history of recess sprts, etc. OBUMMAH is clearly acting unconstitutionally. Libya: #3 - undeclared war - War Powers Act ignored. Boots on the ground in Uganda - oops! - 60 days is up and no resolution. Czar Cass Sunstein and the 2020 Constitution Socety - changing it. All the other czars - illegal. etc., etc. Ahhh, NDAA just signed - secret detention of American Citizens in America BY THE ARMED FORCES - ever hear of the Posse Comitatus Act? read it. SOPA, PIPA, ACTA (signed in Oct., 2011 - needs Senate ratification). Agreeing to ban blasphemy - pick on Islam and you WILL go to jail pretty soon. Thought crimes coming because of what he is doing at the UN and extending it to the States. Oh here's a goody - electronic voting machines and a system that was (UMich hacked it a few years ago) and can be hacked again - now our votes will be tallied by a company in Spain, run by a former Obama employee. Like that one? talk about stealing elections and perverting the vote! Shall we go on?

Oh dear Dan, I asked you to support you claim of Obama destroying our Constitution and you can not.
Fast and Furious was started in 2006 (Bush). Recess appointments are not unconstitutional and have been done by all Presidents since George Washington. Lybia was NATO which was first authorized by Truman. It is not illegal to have 'boots on the ground'. Grenada (Reagan).
Unless you are claiming that all Presidents are trying to destroy our Constitution, then you really have nothing, just empty partisan meaningless rhetoric, And FYI the President can only sign bills passed by Congress; Are they also in cohorts to destroy our Constitution LOL.

Issy, are you out of your mind? [Did it ever occur to you that Panetta deliberately released information to increase the political pressure on Iran? ] I think it is you that doesn't understand the Iranians!!! Political pressure. They don't respond to political pressure, where have you been? You will say next that we should sit around the campfire and discuss this with them. You live in a dream world. Wake up and see the danger to us all.

They absolutely do respond to political pressure. The "access of evil" did more to spur their WMD program than all the empty threats.
The US can not directly attack Iran, but Israel can. But they need American help, weapons and technology to do so. So what Penatta is really saying is that the US is willing to support Israel's attack on Iran. This puts political pressure on Iran.
FYI what is it with you? The world is not black and white, where it is either nuclear holocaust or kumbaya: There are many options in between and certainly when it comes to foreign affairs Obama has excelled.

Here: link to Aaron Klein and his article on Cass Sunstein - 2009. Then read the updates. Yes, POTUS is trying to change forever OUR Constitution. http://www.wnd.com/2009/09/109529/
Issy: with all seriousness. Never trust ANY news story from ANY source anymore - gather consensus from many dif sources THEN make your decisions. Look for the bias in the writer and site, then filter out the facts. The election of this naive kid with his secret agenda was a huge mistake. American Exceptionalism is at stake, and yes I do believe in that. We have an outstanding experiment in America that the world has never seen in history and probably never will anymore now that Obummah is intent on killing it. Justice Ginsberg is wrong - our Constitution, with it's amendments is pretty near perfect. The rest is tweaking through the Courts and Legislatures. New countries should look to what we have and what we have tweaked. Best country in the world as far as I am concerned.
We deploy to protect that, not to be reactive for our mistakes. Obummah has deployed our kids to win himself an election - don't fool yourself - this has nothing to do with freedom - it's about protecting HIS rear.
Issy

Changing our Constitution is not the same as destroying it. There has been many changes (amendments) to our Constitution, all perfectly legal

Dan Seidel

Fast and Furious was not the Bush Gunwalker which was stopped. You say nothing about the plan to limit the 2nd Amend thru Fast and Furious - why? that IS a document. You say nothing about Cass Sunstein and Obama's plan to Amend/change the Constitution - why? Recess appts if INDEED recess are ok. Senate was in pro forma session meeting every 3 days. It even passed Obama's spending limit bill he so wanted passed - Senate WAS in session - Obummah ignored that. Czars? I did not elect them and there are no laws to support their position. SOPA< PIPA and ACTA - nothing? C'mon Issy, you can do better. as for the NDAA - he did not have to sign it, he could have vetoed it and let the Senate pass it again by 2/3 - no guts. What about Hillary and the UN Human Rights OIC Blasphemy laws? Obama signed ACTA. comments?
He's going to get us all killed. The satellite just launched into low earth orbit by Iran? EMP? nah... but maybe...
Forgot: O neverdid anything to change the Interior Dept before the big blow in the Gulf - had years, was alerted to the corrruption, but nah - let the Gulf and the residents die (corexit - blue plague?)
Get real. A tough president with real values? - our kids would not have to be in the Mid East. Things would have been made plain long ago.

Would the Guard have to be deployed to Kuwait if Obama excelled at foreign policy? The Guard is for home duty. We should have about 100,000 deployed troops on the ground in the ME in about 2 months. This never should have gotten this far - a surgical global strike would have finished the job in a few hours a few years ago. Bush was no better - Iran should have been taken out long ago. It's the same folk who let it get this far - so game on. too bad.

As for the Constitution? I would not change a thing. What's changed is pretty good and nothing else I can think of should be added or deleted at this point. Would you change it? and how and why? to what end? and what couldn't a simple law do that was constitutional in nature do that the constitutional change would do better? Would you add "right to a job"? and if so, who pays? Would you make hate speech a crime (insults - remember our 1st Amend and Tallentyre talking about Voltaire)? Leave my Constitution alone - 225 years of jurisprudence intertwined. and PS: I aspire to be a billionaire!!
