Larchmont Mayor Josh Mandell Will Not Seek Reelection; 2012 Nominations Announced
The Larchmont Democratic Caucus announced their nominations today for the March 20 election.
Update: 4 p.m. - Mandell said that he decided not to run again, in part, because he never felt like a "natural mayor."
"I have never been a very gregarious person. People who knew me for a long time were quite surprised, in fact, when they learned of my candidacy just a couple of years ago," he said in a statement to the press.
Mandell went on to say that although he never felt like he would be mayor for the long-term, he did feel that he could benefit the village with his business and financial expertise during a difficult economic period during 2009-10.
"The budget for 2012-2013 is shaping up in much the same way … in fact, even better. We will have no problem whatsoever meeting the challenges of the tax cap legislation this year or next," he said, referencing the 1.5 percent salary increases negotiated with both the Larchmont PBA and Larchmont Firefighters Association which, in part, helped keep the 2011-12 budget increase at 1.70 percent.
And despite his short tenure, Mandell said that he will continue to be involved in the village, both as a resident and a volunteer firefighter. As mayor, he has gained a deeper understanding of what makes municipal government work and said, "I hope I've been able to make the gears work a little better."
After one term in office, Larchmont Mayor Josh Mandell has decided not to run for reelection in March.
Mandell, who has served the village since 2010, did not make a public statement as to why he would not be running again. At the time of posting, Mandell had not yet responded to Patch's request for comment.
Today, the Larchmont Democratic Caucus announced their nominations for the upcoming election on March 20, 2012: Anne McAndrews for Mayor and incumbent Marlene Kolbert and newcomer Peter Fanelli to fill two trustee seats.
McAndrews has served the village for a decade as village trustee—two of them as deputy mayor—and has served under four mayors, six trustees, two treasurers, one clerk, two fire engines and three police chiefs. In 2011, she chose not to run for reelection.
In addition to her role within the village, McAndrews has been involved with the Town of Mamaroneck Zoning Board, Village Planning Commission, the Mamaroneck School District’s Financial Advisory Board and, at present, as a member of the Westchester County Charter Revision Committee, which is seeking to improve county government. She has also served as the former president of the Larchmont-Mamaroneck League of Women Voters (LWV). McAndrews is currently the chair of the Village of Larchmont Democratic Party.
McAndrews holds a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and an LL.M (Tax) from Boston University School of Law. She has lived in the village since 1985 and is married to John McAndrews, who is an attorney with the New York City firm of Mendes & Mount. They have five children, all of whom attended Mamaroneck schools.
Kolbert, who has lived in Larchmont for 45 years with her husband and two children, is a strong advocate for the environment and has served on a seemingly exhaustive list of local committees, including the Larchmont 2020 Task Force, Larchmont-Mamaroneck Center for Continuing Education, Mamaroneck School District Board of Education and PT Council, among others. She first became a trustee in 2002 and has served as a deputy mayor and liaison to the Committee on the Environment, the Larchmont Public Library, the Parks and Trees Committee and the Committee on the Arts, among others. Additionally, Kolbert was a chief fundraiser for the Save Davids Island effort.
Newcomer Fanelli, a.k.a. “Bubba”, is a Larchmont resident who previously ran for the trustee seat on the Republican ticket in 2006, and was recently appointed by Larchmont Mayor Josh Mandell to temporarily fill the trustee seat vacated by Jaine Elkind Eney (D).
Fanelli also is volunteer fireman with the village, coaches teams of the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Basketball Association and the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Little League Softball and has volunteered as a member of the Village Recreation Committee and the Facilities and Maintenance Committee. He is president of United Stage Associates and owner of BFL Theatrical Lighting Company; he graduated from Mamaroneck High School (MHS) and received his BFA from SUNY Purchase. He is married to his wife Theresa and they have three children.
