Cookies Vs. Hot Dogs: Kids Weigh in at Larchmont's Voracious Reader
The store held one of its four weekly reading events Wednesday afternoon.
In a less than shocking decision, a group of about 10 kids voted on Wednesday that they prefer cookies to hot dogs.
The group at weren't voting on the actual food items, though. They were voting between two books by Mo Willems that Francine Lucidon, owner of the bookstore, read to them Wednesday afternoon: The Pigeon Finds A Hot Dog and The Duckling Gets a Cookie.
“We have four readings in the store a week, and on vacation weeks we usually try to do a bit more than usual,” Lucidon said. “And then we have special events throughout the month as well.”
Wednesday's event celebrated the The Duckling Gets a Cookie, Willems’ newest book. The kids in the store colored, ate cookies, read and played games. The readings are normally Mondays at 11 a.m. for toddlers 3 and younger; Mondays at 1 p.m. for infants to 10 months old; Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. for toddlers three-years-old and younger and Wednesdays at 2 p.m. for kids ages 3-5.
The store also has events for older kids and teens as well.
On Friday, April 20, the store hosts an event called "April Shower of Teen Reads" at 6:30 p.m. The event features a panel of four young adult authors—Jennifer Castle, Larchmont’s Amalie Howard, Kristi Cook and Kim Purcell—to discuss trends in young adult books. The authors will also read from their own books and sign them.
From May 7-13, Voracious Reader will participate in the 93rd annual Children’s Book Week, and was even selected as an official event host. Lucidon said the book store will celebrate Children’s Book Week by hosting an event every day that week, ranging in focus from toddler up through teen.
