Hash O Nash—A Middle Eastern Country Kitchen Opens in Mamaroneck with Extensive Menu
New eatery offers diverse multi-national menu ranging from falafel to filet mignon.
Hash-O-Nash has opened on Mamaroneck Avenue and it is probable that no other eatery in Westchester County comes close to preparing as vast a variety of dishes as available here.
Owner Jumana Hamdan explains that the Jordanian name "Hash-O-Nash" translates to "grilling and chilling" in English.
The cuisines of a multitude of international regions are represented ranging from Mediterranean favorites such as falafel and shawarma to filet mignon and ribeye steak. Middle Eastern specialties on the menu include:
- Tabouleh. Hamdan says this is the most popular salad in the Middle East ($7).
- Moroccan feta-cheese stuffed "cigars." Phyllo scrolls stuffed with feta cheese and then pan fried ($6).
- Maklouba (Arabic for "upside down"). Made with chicken, cauliflower and rice, this dish is turned over when taken from the pot so that the rice goes on the bottom ($16).
- Falafel. Prepared by a recipe that calls for the inclusion of both chickpeas and fava beans ($5 or $6 for falafel ball). Note: In some countries falafel is made from only chick peas.
- Hummus. A dip that is made from chick peas, tahini, garlic and lemon juice ($6).
Among the more familiar and diverse dishes that appear on the menu are moussaka (layered eggplant with meat filling), gyro and spanakopita which is a spinach, cheese and onion pie (Greek), chicken schnitzel (German), flanken and matza ball soup (Israeli) and Hungarian goulash.
Popular American-style cooked dishes include rack of lamb, hickory slow-smoked brisket with barbecue sauce (Southwestern, USA), red snapper with spicy Wasabi-Thini sauce, hamburger, a combination corned beef, pastrami and salami sandwich on rye bread, and a Hebrew National hot dog.
She says that two of the most popular sellers since the restaurant opened have been shawarma and shish kabob, which comes skewered in many versions including lamb, beef, chicken, salmon, tuna and cajun shrimp. Shish kabob and other grilled entrees are served with a choice of two sides such as sweet potato French fries, French fries, salad, rice or vegetables. The prices range from $17 for salmon shish kabob to $25 for shrimp shish kabob.
Desserts include flan cake, baklava and katayef.
Hamdan also owns the Avenue Bagel Shop at 227 Mamaroneck Ave.
The restaurant is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. It does not have a separate catering menu but the dishes on the regular menu can be provided in large trays if requested. The restaurant seats 55.

Abe Abdalla, the husband of Jumana Hamdan, is the secret behind the success of Hash-O-Nash, Jumana says; he is also co-owner and chef. He is a self-taught-cook and also owner of the bagel shop.
