UPDATE: Gas Leak Under Control at Mamaroneck High School
Evacuation and emergency dismissal plans were activated.
UPDATE: 10:00 p.m. Mamaroneck High School will be open on Sunday, Jan. 22 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. for students to come retrieve belongings left on Friday.
UPDATE: 3:30 p.m. The source of the leak was an underground pipe that was disturbed while work was being done today, said Con Ed spokesperson Sara Banda.
Earlier in the week, the school reported a leak in a two-inch pipe, located near the administrative offices at Mamaroneck High School, and Con Ed came to the school to provide a temporary solution until a contractor was hired, said Banda.
As per Con Ed protocol, she said, crews must be on site daily to supervise the work. Today, a Con Ed worker smelled gas while work was being done by the school's contractor.
The evacuation has been terminated and the administration has been let back into the building. The gas has been turned off since this morning when the leak was initially reported.
All afterschool, evening and weekend activities have been cancelled and the building is closed to students until further notice due to lingering gas fumes, said an e-mail sent out by the school. Mid-term schedules have been delayed by one day until Tuesday.
The school is hoping to open its doors for a short period on Sunday; notification will be sent out when and if this is possible.
UPDATE 1:30 p.m. A Con Ed crew has the gas leak at Mamaroneck High School under control, said Village of Mamaroneck Fire Chief Chris Szymanowski.
All 1,500 students have been sent home and parents notified under the school's emergency dismissal process, said Debbie Manetta, the district spokeswoman.
District officials were notified of the leak at about 11:20 a.m. after a strong odor of gas was reported. It was on the left side of the building near the district personnel office and administration offices on the West Boston Post Road side. There was work being done on the pipe and gas started seeping into the building.
Manetta said school and district officials were advised by the fire chief to take proper precautions, so the school was evacuated at 11:45 a.m. onto Memorial Field. Everyone was out of the building within minutes, she said.
Parents will be notified via a follow-up call as to when students can return to pick up any belongings that may have been left on school grounds.
Although crews were working diligently to repair the gas leak, a strong odor of gas was still present.
Manetta said the district had been working on emergency drills and meeting with the safety team recently in preparation for similar situations.
EARLIER: Students at Mamaroneck High School (MHS) were evacuated after a gas leak was discovered outside the school, said Debbie Manetta, spokesperson for the district.
"There was an orderly evacuation-all students who drove to school were able to leave."
It is unknown at this time what caused the leak.
